BREEAM and Code for Sustainable Homes (CSH) Assessments

The Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM), and Code for Sustainable Homes (CSH) are widely recognised and used environmental assessment and ratings systems for buildings. BREEAM and CSH address wide-ranging environmental and sustainability issues and enables developers, designers and building managers to demonstrate the environmental credentials of their buildings to clients, planners and other parties.

A BREEAM or CSH assessment involves the evaluation of the performance of a building in terms of specification, design, construction and use. The rating is derived from a standard set of performance measures ranging from management processes to ecology which are set against various benchmarks.

A number of different BREEAM schemes are used to assess a range of common domestic and commercial building types. Bespoke criteria are developed where less common building types require assessment.

‘We were pleased with a swift response and final report within 3 weeks of the quotation for the work, thus securing the required credits under the Code for Sustainable Homes’.

How Five Valleys Ecology Can Help

Five Valleys Ecology can help you obtain ecology credits by providing a ‘Suitably Qualified Ecologist’ (SQE), as specified by BREEAM, to undertake a BREEAM or Code for Sustainable Homes Ecology Assessment. A survey of the proposed development site by our SQE is required BEFORE site clearance.

Once sufficient baseline information has been collected, this would be summarised in a full report with colour plan in accordance with BREEAM and Code for Sustainable Homes guidance to provide evidence to support the allocation of ecology credits under the relevant scheme. Recommendations for small scale alterations to the development proposals where this would assist in achieving further credits is also provided, together with evidence where credits are not considered attainable.
